Archeology Trail is a short, family-friendly trail showcasing some of Zion National Park’s history. It is perfect for walking and conveniently located near the south entrance of the park. This half-mile trail takes less than an hour to complete, serves as the perfect introduction to Zion, and is accessible to all abilities and skill levels.
Hike Details
The Archeology Trail is located a stone’s throw away from the south entrance of Zion National Park. You can access the trailhead from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center; just head southwest, cross the parking lot and Watchman road, and you’re there.
Named for the various historical artifacts that were discovered along this route, Archeology Trail is a great way to connect with the human history of the park while surrounded by the Zion Canyon walls, capsules of geological history in their own right. There aren’t many physical artifacts present on this trail today, but it is fun to follow in the footsteps of the pioneers and Native Americans who once walked the same path.
When to Hike
Like most of Zion National Park, Archeology Trail is enjoyable for most of the year due to the typically mild climate. Summer does bring increased temperatures and visitation, though. If you are seeking solitude and minimal sweat on this sun-exposed trail, consider exploring during the winter months, weekdays, sunrise, or sunset.
