Riverside Walk

Riverside Walk is the precursor to accessing The Narrows, and it is a lovely standalone hike of its own. You can cruise alongside the Virgin River and marvel at the towering walls of the Temple of Sinawava on this serene, well-groomed trail. Riverside Walk is approximately two miles long round-trip, and it takes about one hour to complete. It is the perfect introduction to some of the best hikes in Zion National Park since you will cruise through most of the canyon on the shuttle ride to Riverside Walk.

Hike Details

Riverside Walk is a relaxing trail. It is paved the entire way, granting accessibility to most skill levels and even wheelchairs for the first 0.4 miles. The pathway travels alongside the Virgin River, allowing the calming sounds of the rushing river to accompany you as you stroll. This trail is also perfect for a conversational hike with companions other than the river. The towering cliff faces will stand guard as you follow the trail to the end of the paved path, where you can step into the Virgin’s rocky riverbed or begin your expedition into The Narrows if you choose.

When to Hike

Riverside Walk is accessible year-round, so the best time to hike largely depends on your personal preference. But if we’re being honest, there aren’t many wrong answers when it comes to this hike.

This trail is rich with foliage, so exploring in the fall offers a walk among a stunning array of autumn hues. On the opposite side of the coin, hiking Riverside Walk in springtime will allow you to witness the canyon in bloom. In the heat of the summer, you can take a refreshing wade through the Virgin River at the end of the Riverside Walk hike. And in the winter, the canyon walls offer a pleasant reprieve from any wind.

At all times of year, squirrels frequent the Riverside Walk. Give them their space, and do not feed them, no matter how much they beg.
