Lower Emerald Pools Trail is a magical oasis in Zion National Park’s arid landscape with stunning views of the eastern canyon walls, a viridescent body of water, and a shimmering waterfall at the end of the trail. Featuring some steep yet manageable inclines along the way, Lower Emerald Pools Trail’s captivating scenery and natural features make it one of the more popular beginner trails in Zion National Park.
Lower Emerald Pools Trail is one of three hikes in the Emerald Pools trail network. Its complementary counterpart trails (Middle Emerald Pools Trail and Upper Emerald Pools Trail) take you above the pools and the waterfall, while the Lower Emerald Pools Trail takes you to the same level as the pools and the waterfall.
To begin your hike, hop off at Shuttle Stop 6, called “the Grotto.” Cross Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (the main road), then cross the bridge over the Virgin River. Once you’ve crossed, you will see a sign detailing several different trails you can access. Follow the signs for Kayenta Trail, which will connect you to Lower Emerald Pools Trail.
As you hike Lower Emerald Pools Trail, a paved, sandstone path will take you up the mountain, through beautiful geology and foliage, and down the stairs to the body of water that gives the trail its name.
Like most places in Zion National Park, Lower Emerald Pools Trail is a pleasure to experience all times of the year since the climate is typically mild. Temperatures and visitor counts do increase in the summer months, so plan your visit for a different time of year if you are seeking solitude.
Since this trail is paved and in close proximity to water sources, rainy weather conditions can create muddy, slippery surfaces along the trail. Always check current conditions before embarking on your journey.
