Canyon Overlook

We bet you’ve seen pictures from the Canyon Overlook trail. Trust us – the views are even better in person. This one-mile, roundtrip hike is moderately difficult due to some steep inclines and dropoffs, but perfectly manageable for most able-bodied folks, including mature/well-behaved children. It takes nearly one hour to complete. Be mindful that this trail is very popular, and parking spaces are very limited; since it is only accessible via State Route 9 (SR-9) and your own private vehicle, arrive early for the best experience.

  • Difficulty: Hard

Hike Details

The Canyon Overlook hike is an out-and-back trek with – you guessed it – excellent canyon views at the end of the trail. Along the way, you will climb over, through, and around the fascinating geology that gives Zion National Park its distinct look. Midway through the hike, you will cross a narrow (but sturdy, we promise) bridge as you continue on to the final lookout point.

When to Hike

One of the many perks of hiking in Zion National Park is that most trails are doable year-round, thanks to the typically mild weather. Canyon Overlook is no exception; however, it does experience high visitation volume due to its unique location (accessed by driving your private car through SR-9, which passes through the iconic, yet narrow, Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel) and limited parking – especially during the summer months. Explore this trail during winter and/or weekdays if you’re searching for solitude. While you’re hiking, keep an eye out for the mountain goats and chipmunks that frequent the area, but please, give them their space. No touching or feeding allowed!
